Creating a Stable Foundation on the Takeaway

Creating a Stable Foundation on the Takeaway

An efficient, repeatable golf swing starts from the ground up. Engaging the legs and maintaining ground awareness during the takeaway helps the body stay balanced, athletic, and in control.

During the takeaway, the lead knee’s primary role is stability, not motion. The focus should be on keeping the lead knee flexed and athletic. A helpful ‘feel’ is that the lead knee stays stacked and flexed over the lead foot, acting as an anchor, while the trail side is free to load naturally.

When the lead knee remains stable, the pelvis can rotate more effectively, creating healthy separation between the lower and upper body—key for both power and consistency.

Struggling with balance or an inward-moving lead knee?

Try this drill – Resistance Band Stability Drill:

  1. Place a resistance loop band just above the knees and get into your golf posture.
  2. Gently push both knees outward to engage the quads and glutes, creating tension in the band.
  3. Maintain that outward pressure as you make your backswing.

The ‘feel’ here is working against the band while staying athletic and grounded, reinforcing a stable lower body throughout the takeaway.
